Reading
Reading is a huge part of my life. There was a time not long ago when I read 8-10 books a week. Now it seems like my two or three magazines are the only things I even open anymore.

I’ve been reading more in the last couple of months. I am in the middle of Bait and Switch, the non-fiction report of an investigative reporter who goes “undercover” to try and get a job in the middle class white collar sector. I’m 3/4 way through and it’s very interesting. I would have to say that the only thing I really learned so far is that yes, there’s definately a corporate “mask” you have to wear and no, the best way to find a job or even prepare a resume is not with one of the many job coaches that have sprung up everywhere. Would I recommend it? Yes if you’re a “business book” reader, so you can keep abreast of what people are talking about from this book. No if you’re currently unemployed – you might give up unnecessarily.

I keep a book by my bed (currently a Barbara Delinsky paperback – any one will do), and another one in the V berth rail on the boat. There’s a book on the table by my big chair and a half in the livingroom and a stack of books (each partially read) on the fruit box end table by my spot on the family room sofa. Then, in my office, are the other thousand or so. Every year, I give some away, put some in boxes in the garage for a future sale and try and trade bags full with friends.
Favorite authors: Stephen King, although not lately. Sandra Brown, Barbara Delinsky, James Patterson, Maeve Binchy
, a hundred more I’m not remembering right now.
Non-fiction topics: business, cooking, mother earth news type living, drawing, organization, health, fitness, magic cures for everything, human nature and family relationships, and economics.
Weirdest true confession about reading: My best reads were when I didn’t know what I wanted to read, but walked into the library or bookstore and asked the universe to hand me something I would like. Wow, does that work! Believe it or not I get something life changing every time I try.
You might wonder why I wouldn’t do that every day? The real no nonsense honest to God answer to that is: That kind of power scares the shit out of you on an ordinary day. I think that’s probably true of everything powerfully good in our life.
